Multiple grants are available that can be earned by academic status. These grants can be obtained by students already eligible for the Pell Grant or used by students who wish to study abroad.

Academic Competitiveness Grant

In 2006, the federal government implemented The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) for first or second year college students who are U.S. citizens that have received Pell Grants. The recipient receives $750 their first year of college and $1300 their second year of college. The amount of the grant combined with a Pell Grant must not go over the cost of attendance for the recipient. 

To be eligible the student must be enrolled at least half-time in a qualifying institution, have completed a "rigorous" study program in secondary school, not have been enrolled in a previous program with ACG option and, if in second year of study, the recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) grant was implemented at the same time the ACG was implemented by the government in order to improve math and science instruction and raise the numbers of students interested in the fields. The SMART grant is available to students in their third and fourth years at college. 

To be eligible, the student must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, must be eligible for a Pell Grant, enrolled at least half-time, pursuing a major in physical, life, or computer sciences, technology, mathematics, engineering or a foreign language, and they must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Fulbright U.S. Student

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is for recent graduates or those that will be graduated by the time the grant starts to embark on research study abroad that is defined by the recipient, or to teach English abroad. This grant promotes "cultural exchange" and "mutual understanding," according to Fulbrightonline.org. 

The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, who holds a B.A., is in good health, and be proficient in speaking and writing language of the proposed country. This grant is not automatically offered to recent graduates and must be applied for with a proposal for study.
